This research aims to verify development of venture capital in emerging markets.
Venture capital represents an important alternative to emerging businesses in developing countries by increasing the strength of the entire financial system and its key players, from traditional banking institutions and investment funds, to stock market capital.
The project’s main goal is to identify key actors, investment targets, and experiences as well as aiming at analyzing critical factors and conceptualizing related actions pertinent to becoming more competitive in attracting venture capital investors, developing know-how, overcoming barriers, and maximizing the impact venture capital industry may have on industrial growth. The project is focused on the Arab-Mediterranean region seeking to foster partnership and facilitate investment among European and Arab-Mediterranean countries.
The comments, ideas, and proposals presented in the final part of the work come from a careful study of the key issues and players exemplified by the operation of venture capital. The findings are also the result of observations made at the end of country-level empirical analyses where much time has been spent in contact with entrepreneurs, investors, and local officials.

The purpose of this study is to shed light on the reliability of accounting goodwill numbers by examining whether the root cause of many goodwill impairment losses is the overpayment for the target at the time of the original acquisition, rather than the deterioration of goodwill values caused by events occurred after acquisition. A second related objective is to assess whether the annual impairment test of the acquired goodwill introduced by SFAS 142 improved the ability of accounting standards to timely capture situations in which the amount of goodwill is overstated and should thus be written down.
I tested these hypotheses over a sample of 929 acquisitions completed by US listed companies over the nine-year period from 1999 to 2007. To assess whether the occurrence of a goodwill impairment loss can be predicted based on overpayment indicators, I developed a prediction model of goodwill impairment losses using some indicators measured at the acquisition date that signal potential overpayment by the acquiring firm. First, I found that certain measures, such as the percentage of stock in the consideration and the amount of purchase price assigned to goodwill, in fact represent powerful indicators of the occurrence of a subsequent goodwill impairment. This result is troubling as it suggests that SFAS 141 provisions are at least partially unable to avoid that components other than “core goodwill” being included in the amount recognized as goodwill, casting some doubt on the credibility of prominent goodwill amounts included in the financial statements of many corporations. I also found that the recognition of goodwill impairments lags behind the acquisition time by an average of two to three years. Compared with findings of earlier studies this result indicates that SFAS 142 requirements for annual impairment tests in fact improved the timeliness of recognizing goodwill write-offs, eventually helping to mitigate the failure of SFAS 141.Università Cattolica del Sacro CuoreMILANOFIOCCA, RENATORUSSO, PAOLO2010-04-14Doctoral ThesisAdobe PDFhttp://hdl.handle.net/10280/756enreserved

Social enterprises, Work integration, Social Report, Evaluation Models, Value creation, Public Administration. Work Integration Social Enterprises (WISEs) are very well known in Europe and they are recognized as important actors to promote the active inclusion of disadvantaged people, disabled, homeless, migrants, unemployed, people with disadvantages and minorities, to avoid their discrimination both in work labour and in the society. Work Integration issue is nowadays a relevant theme that considers social matters together with human rights’ respect, equality, freedom and self-determination.
There is the lack of a complete evaluation scheme that could give a whole perspective of WISEs' results. For them there are features and management ties that require methods wider than the economic ones disclosed in the financial report, in order to measure the created value for the Public Administration and community. The PhD work focuses on the creation of a possible evaluation model to apply to WISE. A WISEs’ sample has been selected to understand which elements were difficult to measure and, after the definition of the model it has been directly tested. Local WISEs and institutions have been actively involved in the executions. The main result is the participative creation process of an instrument that evaluates WISEs’ value for the community, through the analysis of their external effect on public budget.

The thesis is aimed at examining the phenomenon of community investments in developing countries by multinationals. After studying existing literature on CSR and its application in developing countries by MNC, the research has been split in two parts.
The first past, explorative, has been done through a survey sent in the first 6 months of 2009 to 100 companies, randomly extracted from the Fortune Global 500 at 31/12/2008. The purpose of the survey was to start understanding the phenomenon of CSR activities done by MNC to communities in developing countries. Once surveys have been collected, the second part of the research has been based on the selection and analysis of 5 cases with the technique of multiple case study analysis. For those 5 companies the work has been done with the analysis of lots of primary source, integrated with data coming from other sources. A significant characteristic of tourism destinations is their high fragmentation, as several stakeholders operate in these destinations, providing different kinds of services to tourists. There is therefore a need to co-ordinate stakeholders so that they provide tourists with a seamless experience and contribute to the development of the destination brand. Co-ordination carried out by the DMO and the destination brand studied from a supply-side perspective are topics neglected so far, and, in order to fill this gap, this thesis aims at showing: how stakeholders are co-ordinated in a destination, to what extent stakeholders are committed to the brand and whether coordination processes have an impact on the destination brand. A mixed method design has been applied to the city of Edinburgh, analysing qualitative data (face-to-face interviews and documents) and quantitative data (an online questionnaire administered to a sample of destination stakeholders). Results show that stakeholders are coordinated through several kinds of mechanisms that have a diverse impact on the destination brand; moreover, stakeholders have a mixed commitment towards the destination brand. From this research it emerged that the role of communication is pivotal and that it is essential for tourist business newcomers to receive information on the destination brand.

The thesis aims at investigating social entrepreneurship attitude to truly act as a crucial tool in the fight against deep poverty and social disadvantages in developing countries, with a particular focus on the main challenges faced by social entrepreneurial organizations in their attempt to promote local social-economic development, while ensuring their own economic viability, and (sometimes) preserving global environment.
The first part of the thesis provides a theoretical framework about social entrepreneurship landscape, with specific attention to some crucial aspects of its essence, its potentiality against poverty, and some distinctive features of its implementation process.
The second part presents two empirically-based analyses carried out by using case-study method, respectively from the for-profit and the not-for-profit domains. The former investigates the processes of opportunity recognition and business model design, with the aim to highlight the divergences among social, economic, and environmental perspectives, and to understand how to combine them; the latter identifies some crucial - internal and external -variables affecting the implementation process and implying the need for a mix between charitable and business aims, approaches, and tools, for a successful blended value creation.

During the last two decades, the interest in environmentally-conscious production and consumption has been considerably increasing. In response to these environmental concerns, a growing number of third-party certified eco-labels has been developed. Through eco-labels companies can demonstrate their commitment in lowering the environmental impact of their products and processes. The aim of this thesis is to provide a better understanding of: 1) the communication mechanisms among issuer, firm and customer; 2) the nature of the main information gaps within this triangulation; 3) the areas of intervention as to reduce the information asymmetries and increase the effectiveness of eco-labels, in terms of competitive advantage for firms and increased beneficial effects on the environment for the issuers.
The multi-method explorative research conducted confirms a wide interest towards sustainable consumption issues among consumers and their willingness to actively contribute; although it highlights numerous communication failures involving both firms and issuers. Interesting suggestions emerge about the consumers’ preferred ways to be informed on eco-labels and about their information needs. It also clearly emerges the need for marketing investment from the issuers, and the need of integrating the eco-label in the strategic vision for the firms in order to value its competitive advantage potential.

In this thesis, I examine the risk-adjusted performance, statistical properties and fund characteristics of hedge fund investments. In Essay One, results of survivorship bias and backfill bias by investment styles indicate that biases are different across styles. Using a multi-factor model of Fung and Hsieh (2004), the analysis of performance indicates that 42% of the hedge funds significantly outperformed the market. Finally, using parametric and non-parametric methods, the analysis of persistence indicates different degree of persistence depending on the hedge fund strategy. In Essay Two, I analyse fund of hedge funds (FOHFs). I find several interesting results. First, FOHFs and the sub-strategies earn positive excess returns and a high Fung and Hsieh 7-factor alpha. Second, FOHFs and the sub-strategies underperform the hedge fund index (HFI). Third, the correlations between FOHF indices and equity index are lower than correlations between HFI and equity indices. Finally, hedge funds and FOHFs are positively correlated with the equity index in the bear markets but uncorrelated with the equity index in the bull markets. Compared to HFI, FOHF indices have lower correlation with equity index in both bull and bear markets, indicating that FOHFs provide better diversification benefits than individual hedge funds.

This work analyzes the development of marketing careers correlated to the Diversity Management. The aim of this paper is to identify the main aspects of the private banking profession. Following a preliminary analysis of its origins and the factors that led to its evolution over recent years, this research investigates main tasks and duties of a private banker, his position in the organizational chart of the company, behavioural and attitudinal characteristics relevant to his role, required level of skills and expertise, as well as knowledge gaps still to be filled. A special focus has been put on his daily difficulties and typical sources of satisfaction, in addition to motivational tools and incentives used by private banking organizations. The survey has been conducted by means of a combined analysis of various qualitative and quantitative research projects, involving both private bankers and opinion leaders within the banking sector. The emerging scenario is an evolving professional role as a result of current structural changes in the business, constantly subjected to new regulations, recurring financial crisis and the continuous globalization process.

Given the emerging importance of people as a contributor to business success, HR function has reorganized itself to deliver more value in efficient way. the business partner model is not unique to HR as all staff functions are trying to find ways to deliver more value to either top-line growth and to bottom-line profitability. However, currently are missing studies that shows impact of the emerging blueprint in an holistic way. With a longitudinal study we analyse the efficiency and effectiveness of the new model on the wider organization and on HR people and this is particularly interesting in moment where several organisation and functions are focusing attention on this blueprint. Using the most recent suggestions on research design are analysed longitudinally HR unit of 42 countries of multinational financial services firm, before, during and after the HR transformation. Outcomes shows that new blueprint implementation is linked to cost reduction and increase the delivery of value, but some issues pop up in terms of perception of internal mobility, that actually is not linked to the implementation of the new model.

This thesis, structured in three logically interconnected papers, aims at achieving a better understanding of the phenomenon of Corporate Foundations (CFs) under a Shared Value Perspective, by determining that these organizations are suitable for creating value for both society and firms, and for addressing multiple stakeholders’ needs.
The first paper, through a review of the literature researching on CFs and on Shared Value, analyses in depth the most innovative characteristics of these organizations, and attempts to consider some potentially interesting issues to be stressed, coherently with the perspective adopted.
The second paper presents an exploratory study aimed at verifying how the interests of the founder firm influence the model, activities and issues addressed by CFs. The paper proposes a classification of CFs introducing an innovative model, the so-called edifier, and underlines which field of activities are more appropriate according to the objective of the firms.
The third paper is aimed at investigating in depth the ties connecting Founder Firms and CFs, with a special attention to the mechanisms through which a firm can impact CF’s effectiveness. The paper puts in evidence that the adoption of a model has a substantial influence on effectiveness, with many consequences on the proactivity, competences and social influence of CFs.Università Cattolica del Sacro CuoreMILANOFIOCCA, RENATOMOLTENI, MARIO MARCO2012-03-30Doctoral ThesisAdobe PDFhttp://hdl.handle.net/10280/1415enreserved

For many organizations, restructuring and cost management are key issues in their strategic agenda. As highlighted by the recent literature on management accounting, the current economic crisis is putting enormous pressure on the functioning of cost management systems in most organizations in the world. The main objective of this research is to analyze the relationship between management accounting change (i.e., cost management initiatives) and organizational change. The thesis relies on qualitative data collected through three longitudinal case studies. The analysis draws on a neo-institutional framework which integrates the insights of recent neo-institutional works in accounting. Our findings show that cost management systems cannot be considered only as technical mechanisms. In fact, an effective implementation of cost management initiatives requires the comprehension of the complex interrelationships between competitive and institutional variables and intraorganizational dynamics.

Scaling social impact is among the most relevant challenges that social enterprises face in addressing global issues like poverty, access to education and health. The dissertation aims at contributing to social entrepreneurship literature by dealing with quests about how and why specific strategies and organizational models may improve the likelihood and the magnitude of the impact exerted by social organizations and which capabilities are most needed for impact to be scaled. Those issues are discussed along three essays. The first article entitled “Scaling social entrepreneurial impact: an open innovation perspective” presents a theoretical model connecting three strategies for spreading social innovation to organization’s confidence on achieving expected social impact and revealing new potential value. The model predicts that a strong relationship exists between the adoption of an open organizational structure and the attitude to reveal potential social value. Indeed, context similarity moderates this relation. The second article entitled “Ba creation and Ba expansion in academic-practitioner partnerships in the social entrepreneurship field” - by building on organizational knowledge creation theory - advances a model predicting the antecedents of ba creation and ba expansion within the framework of university – field organization partnerships, this way contributing to the social entrepreneurship field and suggesting how participants in ba creation and expansion may extend their roles in the knowledge creation process to achieve greater impact. The third article entitled “Scaling Social Impact: A Replication and Extension of SCALERS” contributes to the emerging scholarship on scaling of social impact by replicating initial results of the SCALERS model in an international context (i.e., Italy) and including some situational contingencies as moderating variables of the model.

The aim of this research is to contribute to the methodologic improvement of strategic and operation integrated planning in public administration system. Through a methodological approach based on a longitudinal case study, this work analyzes the experience of Lombardy Region at the begining of ninth legislature in order to identify regularities that could lead to a analitical generalization. A policy research approach has been usefull in order to guarantee susteinable future application in different regional contexts.
The substantive approach has the aim to bring out the elements, techniques, methodologies and tools that have been developed in Lombardy experience. This allowes us to detect regularities that are independent of the particular context.
Among others, for example, the importance of continuity, integration and versatility of the process, and the presence of a department dedicated and a supporting information system that support and implement strategic process. The hope is that the final methodological considerations will be usefull to some regional governments to re-model their strategic and operational processes and systems.

Sono state individuati alcuni importanti risultati.
This work is rooted in the conviction that our economies need both better investments in intellectual capital and better management practices in order to achieve higher long-term growth.
Starting acknowledging the increasing importance of the knowledge economy phenomenon, this study assessed the effects that HR practices and renewal capability can exert on firm’s intellectual capital in order to create a sustainable competitive advantage. The adopted model has considered intellectual capital as the sum of three components: human capital, relational capital and structural capital.
In a dynamic environment, such as today’s competitive arena, intellectual capital can be the key factor to obtain a sustainable competitive advantage, because it is rare, valuable and difficult to imitate or substitute. For this reason, the present study has examined the key drivers to manage intellectual capital in a turbulent environment evaluating the impact of firm’s intellectual capital components on employees’ satisfaction and service quality.
This research has gathered data through surveys of various Italian business units operating in the financial sector and some of their ICT partners specialised in human capital-intensive activities such as software development. A set of findings has been generated. First, renewal capability mediates the relationships between HR practices and all intellectual capital components. Second, human capital has a direct positive relationship with service quality. Third, structural capital has a direct positive relationship with employees’ satisfaction.
Hence, employees’ satisfaction and service quality are nurtured and fostered by different crucial drivers: structural capital and human capital respectively. From a managerial and practical perspective these findings are very interesting in order to deliberating the allocation of firms’ resources to obtain effective intellectual capital configurations.
Future researches may investigate the contributions of different stakeholders to the antecedents of intellectual capital as well as the contributions to its consequences in order to produce value and, in turn, stakeholders’ satisfaction adopting a managing-for-stakeholders approach. Suppliers and customers play a central role and for this reason they deserve particular attention in future studies.

The specific purpose of this research is the analysis of critical issues and conceptual limitations that arise in the phase of logical design within the broader process of implementation and maintenance of the Balanced Scorecard. The design phase of the Balanced Scorecard is vital to understand the orientation of the strategy across the enterprise and the priorities that you want to address and it is there that arises the most critical aspects of the system which are, where possible, enhanced by its monitoring in a dynamic and continuous process of improvement.

(2004), Simons (2000), have focused on how to implement the Balanced Scorecard, but few have analyzed which critical issues are hidden in these choices and how are managed to face the dynamism of an organization that often operates in a highly competitive environment.
The subject is relevant not only in the literature, but also from the point of view of the enterprise operations; in fact, facing the failures of performance measurement systems, the following questions have arisen: whether there are critical points that need more attention, which are the discriminating factors between a success and a failure and which is the best way to manage them.

The system of the organization's long-term business relationships is the organization's Business Network. This theory-building thesis focuses on how business networking influences the organization's performances, and more specifically its innovation capabilities.
An important gap in theory is identified, since there is a lack of consistent research explaining why even Business Networks where all the traditional variables (such as Trust, Cooperation, Number of Ties, Strength of Ties, etc.) are ranking high, may perform poorly in terms of innovation capabilities. An inter-disciplinary effort may be a fruitful strategy for addressing such a gap in theory. Consistently, this thesis was structured as a collection of 8 papers submitted to and accepted by different international Conferences, whose disciplinary focus spanned from B2B marketing to organization studies, Information Systems, Operations research and eParticipation studies. These papers include qualitative researches for theory-building, and the considered cases belong to different industrial sectors such as Tourism and Manufacturing.
The main novel outcomes of this work are: the identification of new Constructs (and related Scales) describing phenomena that influence, according to the qualitative researches conducted here, the innovation capabilities of Business Networks; and the in-depth analysis of how successful and sustainable innovation emerges from creative processes in collaborative settings. The identifed Constructs are: Motivations to Business Network, Attitude to Long-Term Business Relationships, Sustainability of Altruistic Cooperation.
This work hypothesizes that if the main Motivation to Networking is the predictability of business interactions, this may result in a detrimental effect on Creativity/Innovation, and in a weakened resilience of the Altruistic Cooperation. On the other hand, if the main Motivation to Networking is to aggregate power, for example for lobbying activities, this tends to enhance only certain aspects of Altruistic Cooperation, whilst Creativity/Innovation at the network level is likely to be poorer. Finally, if the main Motivation to Networking is to aggregate capabilities, both Altruistic Cooperation and Creativity/Innovation are often positively impacted, especially when also certain levels of Predictability and of Power Aggregation are achieved.

The goal of this study is to understand how organizations operating in a complex market are able to produce, leave sediment, use, share and make available their knowledge.
The focus is on arts & crafts creative industries as still insufficiently investigated organizations, although the proposed theme is increasingly perceived.
This study presents two significant results achieved thanks to a literature review and a qualitative field research.
The first result is the identification of a unprecedented interest of academic studies for the issue of knowledge and its transfer relevant to arts & crafts creative industries.
The second result focuses on the relationship between knowledge transfer and creation of artifacts of excellence. In this second part of the study, the craftsman is a critical factor in the process of knowledge transfer as holder of a knowledge which constitutes and nurtures the sole and the exclusive value of the products.
In the present dissertation the knowledge of these craftsmen emerges as a key resource that must be valued and transmitted as lever of development of production systems based on quality, excellence and differentiation.

After one of the worst world economic and financial crisis, the insolvency prediction has become one of the most debatable topics among scholars. In order to satisfy both the professional investors’ needs and the internal evaluation process, the Thesis rediscovers the original Altman “Z-score” model, known for its convenience. This model is still largely used in the US equity markets but, also for its origin, has hardly been applied to the European equity index. The Thesis investigates and describes the operating characteristics of Altman’s Z-score, evaluating its performance as a tool for insolvency prediction in today's European market. The base model capability is tested examining 568 companies, listed in the main stock indexes of 7 European markets, between 2000 and 2010.
A large variability among different industries arises from the analysis conducted. The Thesis results prove that the model is user-friendly but a substantial inability to predict the risk of default in Europe if used in its original form. The second research question try to analyse how could the model be useful for the European markets, testing the Z score over good heath and insolvent firms from 3 industrial groups. The research studies how the model’s results could be evaluated from a new perspective, focusing on individual industrial sectors results. The research also tries to evaluate qualitative elements alongside the quantitative ones, in order to give a harmonized and comprehensive estimation of the insolvency risk.

The dissertation focuses on the concept of social capital, i.e. “the sum of the actual and potential resources embedded within, available through, and derived from the network of relationships possessed by an individual or social unit” (Nahapiet and Ghoshal, 1998). Although researchers have wondered about the meaning of true customer loyalty for decades, literature still lacks a clear and shared conceptualization. This has also resulted in a poor integration of the concept of customer loyalty in consumer behaviour theory. The general debate on customer loyalty is even more complex when referring to the particular case of retail establishments, in which absolute consumer loyalty is not realistic and most shoppers purchase on a portfolio basis. In order to contribute to the understanding of customer loyalty, this thesis proposes and empirically tests a comprehensive conceptual framework aimed at analysing the psychological process underlying the development of customer loyalty in retail settings. Based on the reference-based paradigm and structured in two stages, the model considers three reference effects, i.e. functional congruity, alternative attractiveness and self-congruity and their role in the relationship between store environment and customer loyalty in grocery retail.
The thesis acknowledges the pivotal role of self-congruity in the relationship between store environment and customer loyalty due to its interplay with the other reference effects. It also proves that market structure, shopping expertise and time pressure are of prime importance when analysing customer loyalty.

This empirical thesis focuses on the role played by typical food marketing (section one) and destination branding (section two) in enhancing the development of a region. The thesis is structured as the collection of 4 papers.
The first section is based on two empirical surveys on the case of Fontina, a typical Italian cheese. The aim is to understand which kind of value can be generated by linking a typical food to the region of origin/ producer/ certification. The analysis supports and builds on previous studies on the importance of PDO certification. Importantly, it contributes by eliciting consumers’ preferences for PDO according to territorial differences.
The second section focuses on the topic of collaboration in tourism destinations. This research investigates the role of trust in the relationship between benefits (economic and relational) achievable through service bundling and hoteliers’ orientation to networking. 164 hoteliers located in Aosta Valley region in Italy were interviewed. Outcomes highlight that trust mediates the relationship between relational benefits and networking orientation. Another interesting result is the mediation effect of hoteliers’ innovativeness on the relationship between economic benefits and networking orientation. The dissertation aims at exploring multifaceted aspects of ethical consumers-organization relationships. It takes into consideration multiple manifestations of issues aroused by the relationship and the market transformations lead by said relationships. The first study explores the potential of collective ethical consumers grouped in Solidarity Purchasing Groups (GAS) engaged with organizations to cooperate in order to affect market mechanisms and determine ethical transformations. A collaboration enhanced at switching mainstream market mechanisms towards improving sustainability values based markets is established between the ethical consumers groups and producers. On the second study a questionable ethical and non ethical consumers relationship with sustainable businesses, specifically biomass energy producers, has been taken into consideration. Though being sustainable, the consumer-citizen relationship with the firm could lead both to positive and negative behaviours. In this thesis we consider a peculiar form of network contract named “contratto di rete”, which has been recently introduced by the Italian legislator. After providing a selective survey of the main contributions from the IMP tradition regarding network relationships in business-to-business contexts, we discuss the theoretical implications of different network structures on the performance of the networks. We also develop an empirical analysis based on several “contratti di rete”. We show that the networks where the firms produce different goods, where the firms are not located close to each other, where each firm perceives itself as crucial for the network, and where the number of firms is low enough, get a better outcome than the networks showing the opposite characteristics. Furthermore, we show that the networks where the power is shared equally among the firms (symmetric networks) perform better than the networks where some firms play a dominant role (asymmetric networks).Università Cattolica del Sacro CuoreMILANOANESSI PESSINA, EUGENIOTUNISINI, ANNALISA2016-03-11T00:01:00ZDoctoral ThesisAdobe PDFhttp://hdl.handle.net/10280/10584itpartially_open

Più in dettaglio, il primo documento è intitolato " Review of impact assessment methodologies for ethical finance ".
Il titolo della seconda ricerca è: " Measurement of social impact in financial institutions: the case of Banca Popolare Etica ".
Il terzo e ultimo studio è intitolato " Does entrepreneurial education impact on antecedents of entrepreneurial intention? An analysis of an Entrepreneurship MBA in Ghana". Abbiamo valutato i cambiamenti nelle caratteristiche psicologiche imprenditoriali (Need for achievement, Self-efficacy, Locus of control; Risk taking propensity; Tolerance for ambiguity) e competenze e conoscenze personali (Creatività, Conoscenza, Flessibilità, Networking e analisi) sul modello esteso della Teoria del Comportamento Pianificato. All organizations have impacts that affect economy, society and the natural environment. Academics from different streams of research (i.e. business and society studies, accounting, strategic management) propose several definitions of “social impact” (Latané, 1981; Burdge & Vanclay, 1996; Emerson et al., 2000; Clark et al., 2004). All these definitions describe, more or less explicitly, the concept of “change”, being each one based on the Theory of Change (Weiss, 1972; Anderson, 2004) – i.e., the change that an organization can produce in people’s way of life, culture, personal and property rights, fears and aspirations, but also with respect to community, political systems, environment, health and wellbeing.
The measurement of social impact leads the organization to consider the changes on stakeholders as a result of the set of cause-effect relations proposed by the theory of change. The objective of social impact measurement thus is to understand, in social, environmental and economic terms, changes that have occurred in stakeholders’ lives because of organizations activities, in order to communicate it (Nicholls et al, 2009).
Despite a growing interest on social impact measurement, academic production in the topic is still scarce.
The present Ph.D. thesis contributes to the ongoing discussion by focusing on the theory, concepts and tools to measure social impact. In particular, two context of analysis are at issue: ethical finance and entrepreneurship education. The work consists of three papers. The first research wants to provide a review of the literature on the issue of measuring the social impact in the context of ethical finance, the second paper is an action research on a methodology for measuring the social impact of ethical banks developed through the extreme case study of Banca Popolare Etica, and the third research concerns the context of entrepreneurial education and aims at studying the impact of an MBA program on the antecedents of entrepreneurship intention of students in Ghana.
More in details, the first paper is entitled “Review of impact assessment methodologies for ethical finance”. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the literature on measuring the social impact in ethical banks. Specifically, we discuss the approach of ethical banks to social impact and social impact measurement considering several studies and frameworks of analysis, then proposing a list of indicators and outcomes to be used to highlight the social impact of ethical banks’ activities. We also point out some gaps in the literature that we left as questions open for future research. The research was carried on with two partners: the Fédération Européenne des Banques Ethiques et Alternatives (FEBEA) and the Institute of Social banks (ISB).
The title of the second paper is: “Measurement of social impact in financial institutions: the case of Banca Popolare Etica”. This is an action research on a methodology for measuring the social impact of ethical banks, grounded on the case study of Banca Popolare Etica. We use a dataset of 1,385 organizations and 1,324 individuals, recipients of funding, to study the measurement of the social impact of the projects funded. Integrating in a single assessment process (both quantitative and qualitative) various methodologies generally singularly used for the measurement of social impact (Social Return on Investment (SROI), Impact Reporting Investment Standards (IRIS) and storytelling), the case shows how the traditional limitations of methodologies to measure social impact can be overcome.
The third and last study is entitled “Does entrepreneurial education impact on antecedents of entrepreneurial intention? An analysis of an Entrepreneurship MBA in Ghana”. This study has the aim to analyze the effects of an entrepreneurship education program, on the antecedents of entrepreneurial intention of students in a developing country. The study analyzes the results of an impact research conducted with participants to a specific entrepreneurship education program: the “E4impact MBA”, held by the Catholic Institute of Business and Technology – CIBT in Accra, Ghana. The mixed method design employed, was an explanatory approach (Creswell, Plano Clark et al., 2003) with a quasi-experimental design (Cohen and Manion, 1989) featuring both pre-post tests and self-perceived change measures. We assessed changes in entrepreneurial psychological characteristics (Need for achievement, Self-efficacy, Locus of control; Risk taking propensity; Tolerance for ambiguity) and personal skills and knowlwdge (Creativity, Knowledge, Flexibility, Networking and Analysis) following the extended model of the Theory of Planned Behaviour. The analysis shows that the entrepreneurship education program has a strong impact on psychological and cognitive antecedents of entrepreneurial intentions. That is, participation in entrepreneurship education program can positively influence students’ entrepreneurial intentions and perceived behavioral control supporting the idea that universities have a key role in shaping and fostering entrepreneurial intentions and abilities through entrepreneurship education program.

This study examines how a brand experience can really be defined as such.
There are several calls in the marketing literature for research to develop a greater understanding of brands (Ballantyne and Aitken, 2007; Brodie et al., 2006; Jevons, 2007) especially using new perspectives. At the same time, on the market side, consumers want increasingly to be engaged by brands and companies project a growing amount of brand experience. However, there’s a deep mismatching between brands and people.
This article wants to make advances in applying experience theory to brand dimension by clarifying the boundaries and specifying the relational mechanisms that occurs between the two main constructs: brand and experience. Field research in Thununiversum context (Eisenhardt&Graebner, 2007) is combined with analysis of existing theory to develop the findings of this study (Burawoy, 1991).
This qualitative study explores the main brand meanings that precede then promote the experiential consumption. Then, based on the experience literature, a typology is derived that classifies the core dimensions within a brand experience setting. The findings suggest that the experience provided by a brand contributes to a process of individual meanings’ requalification. The emerging model try, finally, to design a new concept of brand experience.

This study investigates the outcomes of multimarket competition using data on the top eleven global fashion retailers, and deepens the analysis of the strategic positioning that firms choose in each foreign market where they operate.
Empirical results suggest that the level of international market commonality with direct competitors is negatively related to their corporate financial performance. Moreover, focusing on the strategies of the single local units, the results of the analysis show that firms do not choose the same positioning in all their international markets, but they rather differentiate their positioning. In markets that constitute a small fraction of a firm’s total export, fashion retailers tend to skim the market commanding fairly higher price compared with their average global pricing level.
Furthermore, market size also has influence on strategic positioning and on the relationship between strategic positioning and financial performance. Specifically, this study shows that: (a) in large markets, the winning strategy requires both a high market share and a high pricing; (b) in small markets, winning strategies can be based either on large market share or on high pricing.

The thesis, which consists of three inter-related papers, aims to evaluate and analyze how the collaboration between business and non-profit organizations can create value for the partners themselves, for the stakeholders and for the environment.
The first paper of the thesis analyzes the theme of value creation in collaborations between businesses and non-profit organizations from the point of view of literature, in particular, starting from an analysis of the literature related to the creation of value in marketing, and considering the issue of relations inter organizational and approach of ''living enterprise", the rest of the paper defines the creation of value, always according to the references in the literature, of these collaborations.
The second paper presents, through a quantitative analysis conducted on a sample of businesses and non-profit organizations that carry out cooperation between them, a number of hypothesis that come to define the value created by this type of cooperation and taking into account some constructs like inter organizational trust, interpersonal trust, inter organizational communication, the level of cooperation, the creation of value and the alliance of brands.
The third paper presents four case studies that refer to three clusters in which the database, built for the second paper, has been split. Starting from the definition of the characteristics of an innovative network, the cases have been investigated in order to assess the impact of collaboration on the ground, in a logic of local marketing and value creation for the area in which they operate.

Management accounting theory has generally assumed that accounting information improves decision-making and, thereby, organizational outcomes. The Italian Legislative Decree no. 502/92 introduced the Management accounting systems in the public health care organizations, within the New Public Management reforms. According to NPM theories, “Management is management” in public and private sectors, so the use of private sector management tools can improve public sector performance. However, “no prior studies have systematically tested whether the same kind of management principles and techniques have the same effects in both public and private organizations” (Hvidman, Andersen, 2013). Indeed, concerning impacts, management accounting research is still mainly focused on manufacturing firms while public sector is largely unexplored. In response to this gap, this study investigates the impact of MAS on financial and non-financial organizational performance of a large sample of health care organizations. More specifically, the purpose of this work is to verify whether: 1) The presence of MAS has positive effects on financial performance, on efficiency and appropriateness; 2) The functionality of the costing system is positively correlated with financial and non-financial organizational performance; 3) The relationship between MAS and organizational performance will be more likely in the presence of some contextual factors.

In times of resource scarcity and swift change in collective needs, public authorities are making increasing use of public - private partnerships (PPPs) to reshape day-by-day delivery of public services or to renovate infrastructure. In PPPs, the private partners become involved in government decision-making and program delivery; however, those partners maintain their own long-term institutional objectives, which naturally diverge from public ones. The three papers of the dissertation relate to the application of the accountability issue to PPPs, with different sub-themes, drawn from Forrer et al. (2010): characteristics and classification of the partnership; performance measurement and management; social and political impacts.
The first paper aims to refine the governance taxonomy of PPPs focusing on public service provision. Considering the levels of service contestability and measurability, which were drawn from the literature on public service outsourcing, the study identified four clusters of partnerships. With each of these clusters, I associated some relevant governance features: legal form, institutional aim of the partners, and strategic goal of the PPP. Indeed, higher levels of measurability appear to be associated with contractual (non-organizational) forms of partnerships, whereas higher contestability with corporate forms involving for profit partners. The second paper draws on the consolidated literature on performance management and contingency theory to identify appropriate Key Performance Measures (KPM) for service-focused PPPs. The work provides a model drawing on the integration with the public system to regulate the degree of economic disclosure; while it draws on the degree of specialization to solve the trade-off between measurement feasibility and richness. The third paper focuses on the specific impact of a PPP-DBFO (Design, Build, Finance, Operate) operation on three non-financial issues: building’s compliance to public partner’s desiderata, infrastructure’s flexibility and project’s governance complexity. PPPs appear to help policymakers and managers to maintain the possibility of making strategic choices. If the public partner is experienced enough to cope with a laborious practice, the PPP can help to reach notable social and political achievements; however, costs remain higher compared to the public finance alternative.

The family business is widely considered the dominant property structure around the world and the research on this field has increased rapidly in the last decades to understand whether and in which aspects family firms differ from other organizations. Despite this convergence, the actual body of research on family firms is populated by conflicting theories and findings, especially on the relationship with financial performance.
On the other hand, few studies focus their attention on which strategic choices may explain the financial differences between family firms and non-family peers. Starting from this research gap, we think that both positive and negative aspects may coexist in family firms, and it would be difficult to identify which predominate without considering how family principals frame strategic decisions. In our thesis, we try to disentangle the effect of family ownership on firm performance focusing on three main aspects of firm strategy: the level of strategic conformity through the creation of a composite index (in which we incorporated six items that can be considered as key determinants of the business strategy), the departure of the internationalization process through foreign direct investments (FDI), and the implications of acquisition strategies.

Nel principale contributo della mia tesi (“Is Indebtedness always negative for Credit Ratings? Firms care deeply about their credit ratings, since ratings influence, for instance, firm’s cost of capital (Bhojraj and Sengupta, 2003; Campbell and Taksler, 2003), bond and stock market prices (Dichev and Piotroski, 2001; Hand et al., 1992). This is also true for newly rated firms, typically smaller, in a younger stage of their life cycle and with a shorter track record compared with other issuers to show to the external financial stakeholders. In the main paper of my thesis (“Is Indebtedness always negative for Credit Ratings? Empirical evidence on Newly Rated Firms”), I test the impact of being newly rated firms on credit ratings over the period from 1985 to 2013. I report a negative but pretty low effect on rating outcome for the entire sample of newly rated firms but, surprisingly, I find a strong positive relation between highly levered firms and credit rating. I develop additional research on credit rating in the other two papers of my thesis. In the first paper (“Credit Rating Agencies: a Review of Recent Academic Studies and Key Practical Implications”), I present a systematization of the latest academic contributions on credit ratings and credit rating agencies. In the second paper (“The Dynamics of Credit Rating Standards”), I examine long-term issuer credit ratings and I focus on the time variable to study how credit rating agencies have modified their standards over years.Università Cattolica del Sacro CuoreMILANOANESSI PESSINA, EUGENIOIANNOTTA, GIULIANO ORLANDO2016-03-11T00:01:00ZDoctoral ThesisAdobe PDFhttp://hdl.handle.net/10280/10589enreserved
