Using a sample of non-financial listed firms located in the Euro area, I investigate the determinants of capital structure choices. In line with the traditional theoretical approach, I use a market-value measure of leverage, estimated with the Black-Scholes-Merton model. I find that some variables have similar effects across countries, while others may play a different role; risk, measured as the volatility of the market enterprise value, is the best predictor of observed leverage ratios. Risk, and asymmetric information about risk, make debt less attractive, because of higher expected bankruptcy costs, lower expected debt tax shield and higher agency costs. National environments are an important determinant of observed ratios. The integration of Euro-area financial markets varies significantly depending on the market segment considered: money
and inter-bank markets are highly integrated, corporate bond and equity markets show a clear path of increasing integration, retail banking markets are much less integrated. Traditionally the economic literature suggests that there might exist several forms of human capital, where human capital represents the knowledge, skills and health embodied in individuals. Skills and knowledge are largely acquired through education and experience but may also reflect, in part, innate abilities. In addition, some aspects of motivation and behaviour, as well as attributes such as the physical, emotional and mental health of individuals are also considered as human capital. These activities are referred to as human capital because people cannot be separated from their knowledge, skills and health, in the way they are separated from their physical and capital assets. Human capital accumulation is an important determinant of individuals' earning capacity and employment prospects, therefore plays an important role in determining the level and distribution of income in society. Moreover, the costs of these investments include direct outlays on market goods and the opportunity cost of the time that must be withdrawn from competing uses. Apart from direct investments in human capital people could also invest in constructing a network of relationships for example to find a job. Until now all these aspects have been studied separately, in this thesis I try to reconcile them.

The first two chapters of this dissertation investigate whether some economically-neutral but psychologically-relevant factors can affect investors' decision-making and, in turn, their investment choices. The empirical analysis, conducted on Italian and US stock market data, provides some evidence consistent with the view that several psychological elements indeed play a role in the mental process that generates people's portfolio allocation choices. The third chapter consists in an examination of the market segmentation hypothesis, according to which government bonds with different maturities are not perceived to any extent as substitutes by investors, the consequence being that the yield curve in fact contains different maturity segments that are totally separated from one another.

The dissertation could be traced back to the so called Financial Accelerator literature, that has been developed during the 90's.
In particular it is essentially an attempt to adapt, modify or even subvert the basic framework proposed by Kiyotaki and Moore (KM,1997, 2002) and by Greenwald and Stiglitz (GS 1993, 2003) in order to provide answers to some questions that naturally arise from the study of these types of models.
The thesis is divided into 7 chapters.
Chapters 1 and 2 present and discuss the benchmark model, i.e. the framework put forward by KM, at the micro level (optimization problems of the different types of agents, market equilibrium) and at the macro level (laws of motion of macro state variables) respectively.
In chapter 3 we study the conditions under which bankruptcy can occur and we explore the consequences of actual bankruptcies in terms of disruption of financial and goods markets.
In chapter 4 we present and discuss a paper by Cordoba and Ripoll in which the role of money in a framework à la KM is introduced by means of the Cash In Advance (CIA) constraint approach.
In chapter 5 we follow the Money In the Utility function (MIU) approach to introduce money in the original KM framework. The model seems very promising because is relatively simple, there can be multiple equilibria and the effect of a monetary injection can be explored in a straightforward way.
In chapter 6 we model a KM economy in an OLG setting à la Diamond-Samuelson in which money plays basically the role of a store of value, which allows to increase consumption and bequest when old and bequest plays the role of internal resources for the young.
The model presented in chapter 7 is an example of a microfounded macroeconomic model with financing constraints and heterogeneous agents of the Greenwald-Stiglitz type. An aggregation procedure is proposed in order to go from the individual to the aggregate variable. The model can be explored by means of simulations in an Agent-Based setting.

In the literature agents are endowed by full rationality and hence they are able to anticipate the evolution of the economy. On the findings of the adaptive learning literature, we assume that agents behave as econometricians updating their own forecasts by the available data.
In the first essays we analyze the learnability of the equilibrium by agents when the cost channel mechanisms of monetary policy is operating. Under discretion the expectations-based interest rate rule leads the economy to determinacy of the rational expectations equilibrium (REE), only if the degree of preference for economic stability is sufficiently low. On the other hand, the determinacy of REE enlarges if the central bank stabilizes also the interest rate.
The second part of the thesis concerns on the role of financial stability in the conducting of monetary policy. If in the standard New Keynesian model responding to asset prices shows benefits for the economy, the presence of misspecification and heterogeneity leads the economy to indeterminacy and E-instability.
In an economy characterized by wealth effect and cost channel we show that the optimal discretionary monetary policy drive the economy toward the asymptotic convergence of the economy to the fundamental REE.Università Cattolica del Sacro CuoreMILANOWEINRICH, GERD HELLMUTDELLI GATTI, DOMENICOBERARDI, MICHELE2008-05-16Doctoral ThesisAdobe PDFhttp://hdl.handle.net/10280/267enreserved

This thesis aims to offer a contribution to the understanding of two problems
present in the literature on political economy, one from a game theoretical perspective, and the other through an econometric analysis. These two issues are how polities cope with the scarce supply of ‘good’ politicians, and whether intergovernmental grants are affected by the political and electoral goals of politicians in central government.
The theoretical analysis attempts to give some insights into the reasons why we
observe politicians of very different valence in office, and what are the mechanism
that could enhance the quality of the political class.
The empirical analysis instead focuses on another problem found in the interaction
between the political and the economic spheres. Economic literature extensively
described the rationale behind intergovernmental grants, how for example they can
help solving externalities between local governments, or contribute to a more equitable distribution of resources among areas of the same country. The political economy literature focuses instead on establishing and testing the less noble sources of intergovernmental grants and the political and electoral strategic reasons that might drive the decisions of the central government regarding the allocation of resources between localities. The first and primary aim of my analysis in that chapter is to verify if political alignment between mayors and prime ministers over time determines the size of grants received by municipalities.

Recent studies gave evidence on how a better understanding of the phenomenon of poverty is achieved by integrating the more traditional concept of cross-sectional poverty with a longitudinal concept. The increasing literature on poverty dynamics deals with the time different individuals spend in poverty and the transitions in and out of poverty. Chapter 1 is a review of the econometrical strategies that have been employed in the literature. The focus is on the econometrical derivation of each model, but I aim also at clarifying the specific research questions each model wants to answer and the related policy implications. As it is a well-established finding that families with children are over-represented at the bottom of the income distribution in many countries as well as that children who grow up in disadvantaged environments are associated with diminished cognitive and social skills, the remaining of the thesis focuses on different dynamics facets of the poverty phenomenon. In particular, Chapter 2 investigates the presence of state dependence in Italian child poverty between 1993 and 2006, while Chapter 3 is an assessment of the effect of particular families oriented policies introduced in Britain in the late 1990s on the duration of poverty experiences.

In the democratic countries, elections are the primary mechanism for ensuring that, once in office, a politician actually acts in the collectivity's interest. In the first chapter, I present a survey of the literature on electoral accountability. In the second chapter, I show that the presence of the elections may be the cause of the politicians' reluctance to invest in long-term public goods (political short-termism), and such behavior may be optimal for the collectivity. In the third chapter, I show that reelection concern may induce a politician to continue a policy he introduced in the past even when a policy change would be optimal for the collectivity, and not to continue a policy introduced in the past by a rival politician even when a policy change would not be optimal for the collectivity. This thesis is a collection of three essays about information economics. The first essay studies the possible negative effects of elections on voters’ welfare. In fact, the optimal control of politicians depends on the interplay of disciplining, selection and rent-shrinking effects in a non-trivial way. We show that too much control on the politician may reduce social welfare. The second essay studies an agency model of electoral competition where the incumbent’s ability is unknown to the voters as well as to the politician herself. The analysis is developed in a continuous-time stochastic framework using dynamic programming techniques. Competence is unobservable to everyone and learned over time in a Bayesian fashion through the observation of the value of the public sector. Politicians can divert resources being in office thus reducing the economy wealth but this rent is lower (all other things the same) with an electoral constraint. The third essay describes a continuous-time principal-agent model in which the output is a diffusion process whose drift is determined by the agent’s unobserved effort and by manager’s competence (it is assumed symmetric information about it). We study separately both explicit incentives arising from the contract and implicit incentives arising from career concerns.. Its impact has a large
scale effect on a broad set of variables and it has exacerbated a latent economic problem on
the measurement of true economic variables. For example, the reliability of the Consumer
Price Index (CPI) has been increasingly undermined since it has been argued that price
indexes suffer either an upward or a downward bias due to quality change in goods and
services. This paper is aimed to be a comprehensive survey on historical contributions to
modeling quality from a theoretical perspective. The fundamental contributions of several
economists are framed into a coherent building block. We construct a general framework
for quality adjustment in price index theory which helps to understand the importance of
economic theory for price index definitions. Supply and demand side models are analysed
and merged into Rosen (1974) model, the first well grounded attempt to construct a
general equilibrium explanation to quality choices. First, we address the issue of quality measures into price index theory. Then,
we present a survey of the relevant contributions to hedonic price modeling. We focus on
two main fields of applied analysis: (1) determining how the price of a unit of commodity
varies with the set of attributes; (2) estimating the demand and supply functions for the
attributes of products. The open issues on quality adjustment in consumer price indexes
will be analysed in the two applied papers, namely chapter 3 and chapter 4. They are two
applied original contributions to hedonic price literature. Chapter 3: In this paper we show that a real time measure of pure price change for different varieties

order to compute a pure price index, a theoretically correct quality adjustment procedure
has been determined where quality is measured in terms of attributes (Griliches, 1971a,
1971b; Tauchen and Witte, 2001; Pakes, 2003; Ekeland et al. 2002, 2004; Triplett 2004)
and it is becomes a ’fundamental’ of the market. We have analyzed the prices of apples
and oranges traded in the General Milan Market for fruit and vegetables. We have used a
large amount of information from more than 8000 of observations collected between 2000
and 2004. We have found that quality is changed over time even if new goods/varieties
were not introduced. Price levels adjusted for qualitative levels, measured in terms of
the content of characteristics, are above the Laspeyres hedonic price index on average for
apples whilst the pure price index for oranges is close to the Laspeyres price index. Our
empirical analysis shows that a price index, which does not account for quality change, is
underepresiting inflation for apples and correctly measuring price changes for oranges. Chapter 4: The relevant literature dealing with the problem of quality measurement in passenger
cars (inter alias, Ohta and Griliches 1976, 1983; Lancaster (1966), Rosen (1974), Berry et
al. 1995; 2004) relies on general hedonic imputation methods for the assessment of the
quality adjusted price index. We deviate from this standard approach by computing a new
quality adjusted index for cars based on a weighted adjustment procedure which accounts
for attrition due to observable elements (Fitzgerald et al., 1998; Nevo, 2003; Horowitz and
Manski, 1998). By doing this, we are able to define a quality adjusted price index which
generates a more accurate identification of price index levels than the current state of the
art. We use data for the universe of new cars and their characteristics, sold between 2000
and 2007 in Italy, and we identify the basic reference unit. Based on this we study the
pricing behavior of the firms. We model a non random and non ignorable selection process
based on an entry/exit process of cars (Olly and Pakes, 1996) due to profit maximizing
firms in a differentiated product space. We find that the official index is overestimating
inflation since our results point to a mild deflation. However we show that traditional
hedonic techniques lead to an overestimation of quality improvement and consequently
they under-estimate inflation.Università Cattolica del Sacro CuoreMILANOWEINRICH, GERD HELLMUTCAMPIGLIO, LUIGI PIERFRANCO2010-02-03Doctoral ThesisAdobe PDFhttp://hdl.handle.net/10280/674enreserved
